COUNCIL bosses are inviting residents in Burton and South Derbyshire to comment on a controversial pig farm application.
Midland Pig Producers (MPP) has applied to Derbyshire County Council for permission to build a 30-acre farm in Uttoxeter Road, Foston, and a public consultation period has started.
MPP had previously withdrawn its application to South Derbyshire District Council following the receipt of 2,800 objections citing a range of concerns including noise, odours, ecology and archaeology — along with a protest by animal rights campaigners (pictured right) at the authority’s offices, in Civic Way, Swadlincote, on welfare issues related to the proposed site.
As a neighbouring authority, East Staffordshire Borough Council’s planning department has been asked to comment on the proposals which would appear in an environmental assessment.
MPP claims the site would be ‘ecofriendly’ and plans for the farm had included a feed mill, hoppers, a mess block, water treatment buildings together with storage buildings, a service building, methane gas storage tanks supplying an electricity generation facility and also incorporating a visitor centre.
The application also includes room for four agricultural workers’ homes with garages, landscaping, a rainwater retention area with parking facilities, weighbridges and security fencing.
Copies of the application, the Environmental Statement, and plans are available for viewing at the district council’s planning department, in Civic Way, Swadlincote, until May 13.
Documents can also be viewed by visiting the county council’s website www.derbyshire.gov.uk.
Anyone wishing to submit their views should write to the Strategic Director Environmental Services, Shand House, Dale Road South, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 0AH.
