Plans already being made for jubilee street parties
COMMUNITIES in Burton and South Derbyshire are already putting together plans to hold street parties to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The Mail has learned East Staffordshire Borough Council and South Derbyshire District Council have received inquiries from people wishing to close off streets for parties.
The events could see traffic barred from using certain roads while householders set up tables in the street for mass public celebrations.
Burton Town Hall said in a statement to the Mail: “So far we have had four expressions of interest from communities who are looking at holding street parties to celebrate the jubilee and the council will do everything it can to support neighbourhoods which want to organise such events.
“Street parties are a great way for communities to come together and have fun — and aren’t as complicated to organise as some people may believe.
“Anyone thinking of organising a street party can contact the council or check out our website at www.eaststaffsbc.gov.uk.”
The Queen will celebrate the 60th anniversary of her coronation on June 2 and the event will be marked by a fourday weekend of public celebration.
South Derbyshire District Council has also offered support for anyone wishing to hold a jubilee street party, saying it too had received several inquiries from residents.
The council has also suggested firework displays to mark the occasions.
Matt Holford, the council’s environmental health manager, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for local people to organise a firework event as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
“Here at South Derbyshire we have a fireworks registration scheme for all organised events.” Further information on the district council’s street closure policies is available from visiting www.southderbys.gov.uk
The notion of the street party was revived last year when Prince William and his fiancee, Kate, married at Westminster Abbey.
Parties were held in streets and public places across Burton and South Derbyshire to celebrate the Royal Wedding.
