Police believe football violence could have been pre-planned

POLICE are investigating the possibility that trouble that flared up between football fans in Burton town centre at the weekend had been prearranged.

Rotherham supporters clashed with Leeds United fans in the Lord Burton pub, in High Street, on Saturday prior to Rotherham’s game against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.

Leeds fans stopped off in Burton en route to the West Midlands for their team’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Officers are now seeking to discover whether the clash between the two Yorkshire rivals was premeditated.

Police were forced to intervene and break up the ugly scenes which later fuelled further unsavoury actions by Rotherham fans once inside the Pirelli Stadium.

Rotherham supporters appeared to fight amongst themselves, while a flare was lit and a plastic bottle thrown onto the pitch.

The mood of the fans was dampened further by the fact that two Rotherham players were sent off during the game.

Chief Inspector Steve Maskrey, local police team commander, pledged to crackdown on the offenders.

He said: “They can expect a knock on the door in the not too distant future.

“The behaviour displayed by these so-called football fans is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
