Police to probe death of man at rugby club

Written byLAURA HAMMOND

POLICE have launched an investigation following the death of a man who is believed to have been sleeping rough at Burton Rugby Club.

Officers have arrested a man, a 41-year-old, since finding the victim in the grounds of the Lichfield Street complex, and have confirmed that their inquiries are ongoing.

The man who died, who is also 41, is yet to be formally identified, and as the Mail went to press work was under way to find and notify his family.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “The ambulance service called us just after 3am yesterday morning.

“They were treating a man who was in the grounds of Burton Rugby Club in Lichfield Street.

“The 41-year-old man unfortunately died a short while later at the scene.

“Police are conducting inquiries into the death and are in the process of finding his relatives.

“Formal identification has not yet taken place and a 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death.”

The spokesman would not reveal on what grounds the man had been arrested.

Peel Croft was cordoned off all day yesterday, and training which had been planned for the evening had to be moved elsewhere.

Officers at the scene told the Mail they did not know when the cordon would be lifted.

Paramedics were the first to arrive yesterday, when they were alerted just before 3am.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a man in cardiac arrest.

“An ambulance and a response paramedic were sent to the scene and the patient was confirmed deceased a short time after we arrived.”

No-one was using the rugby club’s facilities at the time of the incident, and the committee had not had chance to meet when the Mail attempted to contact its members yesterday afternoon.

However, health and safety officer Brandon Cook said: “We don’t know the circumstances around it or the cause, so it’s difficult to have any approach other than to express sympathy for the individual.”
