Politician gathers support for election campaign

Written byMARK MCKAY

THE man aiming to become Burton’s next MP spent a day rallying support for his campaign in the town.

Jon Wheale, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Burton, was joined by MP for Stoke Central Tristam Hunt outside Coopers Square shopping centre in the party’s national ‘day of action’.

Burton is one of 106 key seats which the Labour party will target in its bid to regain power in the General Election next year.

The day of action focused on the supposed raising cost of living since David Cameron became Prime Minister three years ago.

Mr Wheale said people are now £1,600 a year worse off since 2010.

He said: “Too often I meet local people who are struggling, choosing between heating and eating or unable to meet childcare costs. Fuel poverty is affecting thousands in East Staffordshire.

“With rising fuel bills, train fares and prices in the shops people are facing real difficulty. People here know all about the cost of living crisis.”
