BURTON’S Poundland store – which was the company’s first to open – is set to move to the former home of grand department store House of Fraser.
The discount retailer has announced plans to move its first ever store to a bigger and better location in The Octagon shopping centre.
It will set up home in the former Beatties two-storey unit – taking over both floors. While it will trade from the ground floor, the chain will use the first floor for storage only.
Richard Lancaster, Poundland’s trading director, said: “The new store, located in The Octagon shopping centre, is almost three times the size of the existing store in the same complex showing Poundland’s popularity in the town.
“Poundland has grown significantly over the past 12 months and it’s fantastic to see this expansion continuing with a bigger and better store in Burton.
“We’re looking forward to opening our doors.”
Dave Dodd and Stephen Smith founded the retail chain in April 1990 and opened the pilot store in Burton in December 1990 after being turned down big landlords who had reservations about allowing such a store to operate. A year later, it opened six more shops across the country, and last year boasted profits of £31.7 million.
Beatties closed its doors in the town after 22 years in the same unit after owners, House of Fraser decided not to renew its rental agreement on the two-storey unit.
Paul Howard, Burton’s town centre manager, said: “It is a key unit in the Octagon, one of the largest units so it is good news and it is what the people want.
“It is where it all started.
“It will be good for the market upstairs as well because the number of people walking past the escalators will increase.”
Paul Price, of Paul’s Café, which now trades as part of the market on the first flood of the shopping centre also welcomed the news saying it will encourage further trade to an already ‘buzzing’ market.
Burton’s Poundland store expanded by 123 sq metres in August 2010, welcoming Coronation star Andy Whyment, who plays soap simpleton Kirk Sutherland, to its official opening.
