Pub puzzled by objection to extended opening hours

Written byTIM FLETCHER

A PARISH council has opposed plans for a Burton pub to extend its opening hours — claiming it could lead to increased crime and disorder.

online newsThe New Inn, in Horninglow Road North, has applied to East Staffordshire Borough Council for permission to serve alcohol until midnight from Monday to Thursday, 1am on Friday and Saturday and midnight on Sunday.

The changes would see it serving half an hour later than at present on Mondays to Thursdays, and an hour later on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with closing time half an hour after last drinks are served every night.

The scheme will be discussed at the next meeting of the borough council’s licensing committee, but Horninglow and Eton Parish Council is asking its borough colleagues to turn down the application.

In a letter to licensing officers, parish council clerk Kay Lear said: “The parish council feels the hours should not be amended to ensure the prevention of crime and disorder and public nuisance.

“They were concerned that extended hours would cause disturbance to residents living in the area. They feel that if licensing hours are extended this could run the risk of increased crime and disorder which local residents will have to be faced with.”

However, licensee Louise Magee said she was at a loss to understand the parish council’s opposition and said the later hours would simply bring her pub into line with others in the area.

She told the Mail: “The other pubs along that strip have the same opening times so why can’t we be the same? “It’s just to bring us in line with everyone else.

“Once we close earlier, the customers generally dwindle off and either go to the next pub down or straight into the town centre.

“I can’t see that us opening half an hour or an hour later is going to make any difference to crime or disorder.”

The application will be discussed at the licensing committee meeting taking place at 10am on Wednesday, October 10, at Burton Town Hall.
