SLIDESHOW: Racers were just pan-tastic
ADULTS, children and furry mascots have taken to the streets of Burton and South Derbyshire for the annual Pancake Day celebrations.
Batter was mixed, pancakes tossed and a variety of outlandish costumes donned as energetic types marked Shrove Tuesday in traditional fashion.
Our pictures show events taking place in Barton under Needwood, where youngsters raced through the streets, frying pans in hand, and in Swadlincote, where around 40 teams and more than 100 competitors covered a specially constructed 150m course on The Delph.
Burton Albion’s Billy Brewer romped to victory in the colourful mascot races, beating off competition from rivals Gresley FC’s Elvis Gresley and Derby County’s Rammie, while Richardson’s Furniture store polished off local rival Toons in the ‘showroom showdown’.
In the keenly contested relay races, firefighters, hairdressers and charities enjoyed the glare of the spotlight, with Ryder Close-based Keystone UK Ltd blowing away the opposition to take home the much-coveted medals.
Michael Stanton, chairman of organiser South Derbyshire District Council, said: “It was a day that showcased Swadlincote, its people and businesses at their very best.”
