A LATE-NIGHT licence for a new Indian restaurant in Burton has been given the go-ahead — despite complaints from neighbours that the street already stinks of “onion and curry.”
Apne Indian Cuisine in Cross Street was backed by East Staffordshire Borough Council’s licensing committee amid fears from nearby residents that the business would fuel “unpleasant” smells and noise they claim are already intolerable from existing premises.
Patricia Johnston, of Milton Street, said: “I’m not against anyone trying to set up new businesses in the area. But I do object to the overpowering smells and the noise that will surely follow.
He said: “Of course, everything that is cooked creates a different smell, but there are other establishments set in the area as well and I have agreed with all the conditions set out by the planning department and the police.
“I want to create a successful business with more job opportunities.” David Leese, chairman of the licensing committee, said: “We have sympathy for the residents living nearby, with regards to issues surrounding the noise, smells and parking problems.
“However, these issues have arisen due to other premises and not with regards to this application.
