Robber uses gun in raid

POLICE are questioning a 29-year-old man after a female cashier was threatened with a gun during an armed raid.

Derbyshire Police revealed that they had arrested a man on suspicion of robbery following the incident at the Esso garage in Hatton.

The manager of the Uttoxeter Road service station (left) said the woman cashier was unhurt but ‘very, very shaken’ by the incident, during which the intruder got away with money from the till.

He said a masked man told the woman: ‘Give me the money or I will shoot you’.

The robber walked into the shop at 10pm on Thursday with a scarf over his face to shield his identity.

The manager, who only wanted to be named as Chris, said: “She told me he pointed a handgun at her and said ‘give the money or I will shoot you’.

“It’s quite a shocking thing to happen to us, I have worked here 12 years and been the manager for four of those and nothing like this has ever happened here before.”

Chris said the man then ran out of the shop to a car that was waiting in nearby Malthouse Lane.

He said: “A passer by saw him and took a note of the registration number of the car which sped off down Station Road and then turned back on itself and drove off up Malthouse Lane.

“Alison (the cashier) said that as soon as the man left the shop she pressed the panic alarm that we have here then she dialled 999 and then she called me.

“The police came an sealed the garage off and dusted for fingerprints.”

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police told the Mail: “A white man, dressed in dark clothing, went into the premises carrying what appeared to be a hand gun. He demanded money, stole cash from the till and left. No shots were fired and no-one was injured.

“A 29-year-old local man was arrested yesterday morning on suspicion of robbery.

“He remained in custody being questioned by police last night.”
