FOURTEEN teams from across the country competed in the barrel rolling championships – but one Burton couple still came out on top.
Keith Norris held off challengers from breweries in Gloucester and Quantock to hold onto his crown as men’s singles champion at the National Brewery Centre, in Horninglow Street.
He was handed the original silver trophy used for the first ever championships in 1933.
The mixed doubles competitors competed for the Briggs of Burton Trophy, which was returned to Burton by Markus Dollinger who was one of the competitors when the Germans won it in 2002.
The trophy was last won by a British team from Marston’s in 1996 before being won by teams from Czech Republic and Germany. Christine and Keith Norris won the trophy against teams from Burton Bridge Brewery and Freedom Brewery.
The ladies singles was won by Christine Norris, against Gloucester Brewery and two independent runners.
Mr Norris, chairman of the National Brewery Heritage Trust, said: “The event was very exciting and I thank everyone who helped make it possible.”
