CHILDREN in Stretton could be joining forces with the parish council to take part in commemorative activities in the area.

Historian and councillor Malcolm Goode, who is leading the arrangements for centenary events in the parish, is working with schools to get youngsters on board.

He has already met with staff at De Ferrers Academy, and plans are already under way to get the Fountains School Federation and William Shrewsbury Primary School working on the project as well.

“It’s all looking quite favourable,” Councillor Goode said.

The involvement of schools is a major factor in the council’s plan to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War. It is hoped that events and activities will run for five years, ending with a commemoration in 2019 to mark 100 years since peace treaties were signed at the end of the war.

Steve Allen, principal at De Ferrers Academy, said: “I think it’s very important for the students to do this. It’s a significant thing that 100 years ago the first world war began.

“The last veterans of the first world war passed away a few years ago, and it’s important for all our students to mark the fantastic sacrifice that took place.”

A working group has been formed at the school, led by its head of humanities which will work with the parish council.

Councillor Goode is also hoping to work with people in adjoining parishes to organise events which sit alongside those being organised by East Staffordshire Borough Council.

In January, he appealed for people volunteers to help with the arrangements, but there was little interest.

But, the latest parish council meeting, he said he would not be put off.

“We are looking for anybody with an interest in the First World War,” he said.
