Secret service author released new novel

Written byBY HELEN KREFT

A FORMER police detective has released a new novel.

Following the success of his novel ‘A Surprising Legacy’ ex-detective John Swain, who was born and bred in Swadlincote, has produced the sequel promised to his readers.

Mr Swain, who now lives with his wife, Margaret, near Leek, was a special branch detective with Derbyshire Police and has also worked for MI5 and MI6 and briefly with the American Secret Service.

His new novel, The Lightning Tree, features the same characters and is the story of the re-appearance of Sarah’s former adolescent lover, and later benefactor, who was believed to be dead.

Mr Swain said: “My writing began in retirement, inspired by friends and by the fabulous Peak District where I live.

“Fortunately my working life as a police Special Branch detective was as exciting as it was dangerous and provided me with the ideas that I weave into my novels.

“My first novel, ‘A Surprising Legacy’, was carried in my head for seven years before I put pen to paper.”

The Lightning Tree is available from Brierlow Bar Book Stores, The Book Shop in Leek and also directly from the author by calling 01298 77830. It is also available from Waterstones, in Burton.

In addition to the paper-back copies John, who writes under his other Christian name, Ernest, to prevent confusion with another author, is also enabling the book as an e-book that can be downloaded on Kindle and other electronic mediums.
