CUSTOMERS were evacuated from Specsavers in Burton after strong winds caused structural damage to the building.
Shoppers were ushered out of the branch in High Street on Thursday after noon after a window was found to be unstable.
Appointments had to be cancelled and customers turned away as Specsavers closed early due to safety fears.
The branch reopened around noon yesterday.
Scaffolding is currently in place, but the building has been judged safe to enter.
Catherine Robinson, a store director, said: “We had a few gusts of wind which cause damage to the building.
“Our main concern was that the building and the window was safe so we evacuated customers and staff moved to another part of the building.
“We did manage to contact people with appointments but we get people who just drop in to collect glasses.”
Winds of up to 60mph caused havoc across the region on Thursday, with trees, lampposts and telegraph poles all brought down.
