Success for Katie in agriculture scholarship award

Written byBY HELEN KREFT

A UNIVERSITY student near Burton has been awarded a prestigious scholarship which wipes the financial burden from her final year.

Katie Wilson, from Abbots Bromley, is studying a BSc (Hons) Agriculture and Mechanisation at Harper Adams University and has been awarded The Staffordshire & Birmingham Agricultural Society Scholarship.

The society plays a role in the development of agriculture and the rural economy within the region. Its work includes support for business and social welfare in rural communities, education and regional shows and events.

The 22-year-old, who receives £1,000, said: “As a recipient of the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society Scholarship I feel very honoured, as not only am I a member of the society, but I am also a member of Staffordshire Young Farmers and an achievement such as this helps to strengthen the links between the two societies.

“My scholarship has enabled me to give my final year studies my full attention without having any financial concerns, so that I can fully optimise my potential.”

Katie received the scholarship at the annual Harper Adams University Development Trust Scholarship Presentation.

Anthony Burgess, chairman of the Development Trust, said: “This is the 7th year of awards. In 2006 to 2007 we made 21 awards of £17,000. This year we made 99 awards of £225,000.

“I thank our sponsors, our professional team and the academics who give their time voluntarily. Finally, we come to our students. Well done and congratulations.”
