Survey shows Burton people are most fit at 27

Written byROB SMYTH

A NEW survey by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in Burton has revealed that the optimum age for physical fitness in the area is 27.

The poll of 2,000 people by the BHF also revealed that the age at which the average person in the area aspires to stay physically active is until 57 years old.

More than a third of those surveyed said eating a healthy diet was the reason behind them feeling at their physical peak.

This was closely followed by participation in sport and drinking less alcohol.

Shockingly, more than one in 10 surveyed said the last time they were really physically active was at school, college or university, and nine per cent said they hadn’t been really physically active in more than 10 years.

In addition, only a quarter of people said they had been really physically active in the past week.

Nancy Prior, head of events at the BHF, said: “We are leading increasingly busy lives and it can be difficult at times to prioritise physical activity with family and work commitments getting in the way.

“However, with more than a third of those surveyed rating good health as the number one attribute to have, we would encourage everyone to make time for regular physical activity to help keep your heart healthy.”

The pressures of modern life were blamed for declining fitness levels, with working much longer hours in the office coming out on top, followed by having children and getting married. and going to university and moving away from sporting facilities.

The decline of physical fitness was seen to be a weighty issue, with a quarter of people pointing to their children taking up time that was previously spent doing physical activity, leading to them to pile on the pounds.

Romantic relationships were also placed in the firing line, with nearly a fifth of those surveyed saying they became less fit and active once they forged a stable relationship.
