BURTON Albion’s Swedish supporters’ group is backing the Brewers for promotion this season with a growing number of fans now regularly visiting the Pirelli Stadium from Scandinavia.
The Gothenburg Brewers have a website dedicated to Albion and now have a hardcore of around 15 supporters - seven of whom will be travelling over for the big match with Portsmouth.
It will be the third home match this season for Gothenburg Brewer Joachim Jacobson, 32, after already seeing Albion in action against Bury and Fulham.
Now he’s hoping to cheer the Brewers on to victory against the former Premiership club on Saturday.
He told the Mail: “We fly from Gothenburg to London and then we will take the train to Burton.
“Portsmouth are such a big team we wanted to see this match. English football in Sweden is very popular and everyone knows Portsmouth. Nobody knows about Burton – apart from us. But we like Burton. This will be my third trip in three weeks, so more than I ever expected. The last time I was here it was fantastic – the welcome from everyone at the club and all the people in the streets of Burton.
“We have had few hours in the town and had a few beers as well. We like beer so it’s the perfect place to be.”
Joachim, who has now been featured in a Swedish football magazine and on a Swedish radio station talking about the Brewers, is optimistic that Albion can gain promotion to League 1.
“They are going to have a brilliant season, I think. The squad this year is much better, so I can see them pushing for promotion.”
The Gothenburg Brewers were born ater Joachim caught the match action from the Pirelli Stadium on the Football League Show.
“Me and my friend told all our mates about Burton Albion and some thought it was strange that we were going to start following this team. But these days, when football is so much about money, that’s not how we like it. We prefer a team like Burton.”
