THE date of an annual event in memory of a fallen soldier from Newhall has been announced.
Now in its third year, Tab 4 the Fallen 11 13, is held in honour of Corporal Russell Aston (left), a member of the Royal Military Police who was shot dead in Majar al-Kabir, near Basra, in southern Iraq, while serving in 2003. The 30-year-old left a wife and young child.
The event, which will take place on November 9 and raises money for UK Homes 4 Heroes, is organised by his friend and comrade Corporal Eben Tatam.
He told the Mail: “Over the last three years it has grown and grown. It is a tribute to all that have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
The tab is a military-style march from the National Memorial Arboretum, in Alrewas, through Coton in the Elms, where participants lay a wreath to the slain soldier, and then go on to the war memorial in Burton.
Current and former service personnel take part by carrying weights, kit and water.
Civilians can also take part, and though the weights are optional for them, they must carry kit and water for the 11-mile journey.
“We start together and finish together, and 11 miles with kit is not an easy feat at the best of times,” said Cpl Tatam.
The walk starts at 11am.
