A FORMER Britain’s Got Talent finalist is set to switch on Burton’s Christmas lights this weekend.
Michael Collings came fifth in the ITV talent show in 2011 and will be the star attraction at the event on Sunday.
It will be the second year in a row that the town has been graced with the appearance of a music star at the event with Chesney Hawkes taking on the responsibility last year.
He will switch on the lights at around 5pm with help of Burton Albion manager Gary Rowett and the mayor and mayoress of East Staffordshire Len and Jackie Milner.
The action kicks off at lunchtime with the opening of a charity market.
Touch FM breakfast presenter Mark O’Sullivan will then host a stage show from 3pm before Mr Collings arrives on stage at 4.30pm to start the countdown to the switch on at 5pm.
The event will be rounded off with a fireworks display by Burton-based world musical firework champions Pyrotex.
Town centre manager Paul Howard said: “Once again, many thanks to our main event sponsors — Star City Birmingham, Burton Place, the Octagon and Coopers Square shopping centres — who have continued to support this event in a big way.
“Also to Touch Radio for their support in hosting the event, providing the staging and the local acts that will take part.
“This event wouldn’t happen without the support of various people within these organisations.
“The fireworks this year will be choreographed to music which I am particularly looking forward to.”
Mr Collings will be best known for being lauded for his rendition of Fast Car by Tracey Chapman by the hit show’s judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Michael McIntyre and David Hasselhoff.
He went on to make the series final but lost out in the public vote.
After exiting the contest, he released a cover version of the song via iTunes.
