'Tarzan' swings in to speak at anniversary celebration

A FORMER Cabinet minister in the Thatcher and Major governments is to be the key speaker at a business group’s bicentennial dinner.

Lord Michael Heseltine, nicknamed ‘Tarzan’ after his combative style, will address the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group event on April 18 at the International Convention Centre.

Among the UK’s oldest and largest chambers, the Birmingham group, which includes Burton and District Chamber, boasts almost 3,000 member companies which employ more than 200,000 affiliate organisations representing 15,000 people.

Said to be a staunch supporter of the group, Lord Heseltine’s report and recommendations in the ‘no stone unturned’ economic review resulted in a three-month pilot project in its area.

Chamber president Steve Brittan said: “We are delighted he will be our key speaker and with the confidence he has shown in Birmingham and the chamber.

“He has been extremely forceful in his belief that chambers should have a lead role in galvanising the support of other business organisations.”
