Teen impaled on railings at Melbourne pub

A TEENAGER had to be taken to hospital after he became impaled on railings at a pub.

The 14-year-old had been spending the evening in the beer garden at the Melbourne Arms, Melbourne, when he tried to jump over a gate and became stuck on the railings.

Ambulance crews and two fire units went to the incident in Ashby Road.

The injured boy – who has not been named – was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital for treatment to his injuries.

He was freed by ambulance crews before the fire service arrived.

The owner of the pub, who would not give his name when approached by the Mail, said the boy had been playing in the garden while he was out with his parents and grandparents, and had been warned against playing on the gate.

He added: “The boy was trying to jump over the gate.

“He was warned.”

The incident happened at about 7.40pm on Saturday but full details have only just emerged.

Fire crews from Swadlincote and Ascot Drive went to deal with the call on Saturday, but when they arrived, the boy had already been freed.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said: “The incident involved a 14-year-old male who was impaled on railings.

“He was released before the fire service arrived and our crews assisted ambulance crews with treatment and supported them in getting the boy to the ambulance.”

It has not been possible to contact East Midlands Ambulance Service, so the extent of the boy’s injuries is not known.
