SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has confirmed it is to turn a Burton pub into a new supermarket — creating 20 new jobs.

The firm has for the first time spoken about its plans to convert the Copper Hearth, in Stanton Road, Stapenhill, into a Tesco Express store.

Company spokesman Matthew Magee said: “We’re very pleased to be bringing a new Express store to the area “The wide range of fresh products and essential grocery items means that our Express stores are very popular and we’ll be creating around 20 new jobs in the store, which is a real boost for the area.

“There’s a good amount of parking and plenty of space for the deliveries so we’re confident that our new store will be a great addition to Stanton Road.”

Meanwhile, Tesco has submitted an application to East Staffordshire Borough Council to install a new shop front to the building, built in 1959, including advertising space, traffic bollards and a cash machine.

The firm is unlikely to need permission to change the use of the building, as planning guidelines do not generally require permission for converting pubs into shops.

However, people living near the former pub have voiced their concerns about the potential impact of increased traffic at the site, which lies across the road from Edge Hill Junior School.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “There’s enough traffic there already with people taking their kids to school and back.

“To say it will create a traffic hazard is an understatement — it’s a recipe for disaster.

“I don’t see why we need another shop when we’ve already got a Co-op across the road and another one at the bottom end of Stanton Road, as well as Hadfield’s and the new Spar shop in Rosliston Road.”

Another resident commented: “I’m totally against this idea because of the location near to the school.

“We’ve already got the school traffic and now we’ll have lorries delivering all the time, as well as the traffic from people using the shop.”

The consultation period on Tesco’s plans for a new shop front at the premises expires on Thursday, April 12.
