BURTON Town Hall’s 17,000sq ft extension has not been sold, council bosses have insisted, despite the removal of for sale signs from the building.

Rumours over the future of the 1930s annex have been circulating after the huge banners declaring the building’s availability were taken down.

The building was officially put on the market in October, having been empty for the last two years.

But despite the omission of the for sale signs, East Staffordshire Borough Council insisted a new suitor had not yet been found.

A spokesman said: “The town hall annex has not been sold and we have no further comment.”

The building has been vacant since the borough council relocated to The Maltsters, in Wetmore Road, in 2011.

The building has become a drain on the authority’s funds, with it currently going unused and in need of an estimated £750,000 overhaul.

The council previously said that if the annex couldn’t be sold, it could be demolished to make way for flats or green space.

But the authority’s preferred option would be to be able keep the part of the building in tact by selling it.
