ONE lane of the A38 at Branston was closed from lunchtime onwards today following an obstruction on the carriageway.
It was later confirmed that a manhole cover had become loose and was made safe by Openreach engineers
Staffordshire Police were called to the scene at 12.30pm and closed a lane of the northbound carriageway.
A police spokesman said: “A cable box was causing a obstruction to the carriageway. Engineers have been in attendance and we were there to assist with the traffic. We closed one lane and the Highways Agency then took over.”
A engineer at the scene told the Mail the inside lane could remain closed for days as work needed to be done to dig up a section of the road.
Further problems were created when a car collided with a road sign at Branston at around 4.25pm. The driver was not injured.
