A TRIBUTE has been paid to a former councillor who became chairman more than 20 years ago.
Elizabeth Oakey, a former chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, has passed away.
Councillor Bob Wheeler, leader of South Derbyshire District Council, paid tribute to Mrs Oakey, saying: “The council has learnt of the sad death of Councillor Mrs Elizabeth Oakey. Known to all as Betty, she was chairman of the council from 1988 to 1989.
“Her commitment to others was reflected in her Chairmanship of the Accident Prevention Committee which later became the Safety Committee under her guidance.
“She will be missed by her former council colleagues and staff. We are all grateful for her work for the people of South Derbyshire.”
