A DETAILED report into the way Queen’s Hospital deals with patients with hip fractures has shown that it has some of the lowest mortality rates for the condition in the UK.
According to the 2013 National Hip Fracture Database, the Belvedere Road sire has recorded a mortality rate of 3.2 per cent, which is well below the national average of 8.2 per cent.
It was also revealed that nearly 90 per cent of patients receive surgery within 48 hours.
Orthopaedic consultant Mr Neil Ashwood said: “We have developed a multi-disciplinary approach which enables patients to be fast-tracked through the emergency department.
“The national audit is an important part of our work and we invest the time in taking part because we can accurately measure our improvement rate against those at other hospitals which helps to drive up standards across.”
