EXTREME sportsmen will embark on an ambitious test of endurance to raise money for injured and wounded armed forces personnel.

Skateboarders, inline and BMX riders plan to push and pedal 20 miles from Derby to Swadlincote to raise cash for Help For Heroes in May.

Help For Heroes provides support for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women in Britain’s armed forces.

James Fairbrother, 27, of Oversetts Road, Newhall, who is organising the event, called From Xtreme to Extreme, said he hoped the ride would get the sports noticed.

He said: “We are getting more and more people signing up every day to do it so it is still growing.

“I have always wanted to do something like this or skateboard-related for charity. It’s a good way to get extreme sports noticed and get people involved in it.

“It’s going to be hard work but a right good laugh.”

The riders will take a route from the skate park at Derby’s Bass Recreation Ground, along a footpath by the A38, past Pirelli Stadium and finish at The Angel Inn, in Church Street, Swadlincote.

Mr Fairbrother, who has skateboarded for 15 years, said he was now focusing on getting fit for the challenge.

He said: “It’s going to be pretty hard core.

“This is a big physical commitment.

“Right now everybody is just training because it’s going to be hard work.

“At the minute we are going to indoor skate parks until there’s warmer weather.

“Once it gets dryer we will be hammering ourselves to get fit.”

Sponsor forms for the ride can be picked up from The Angel Inn, in Church Street, Swadlincote.
