Twenty new jobs if village supermarket gets the nod

PLANS for a new supermarket in a South Derbyshire village look set to go ahead after planning chiefs recommended the application for approval.

AldiAldi supermarket developers have resubmitted plans to South Derbyshire District Council for a proposed new store on land off Huntspill Road, Hilton.

It is a major application involving more than two objections and, as a result, members of the council’s planning committee are due to decide its outcome at a meeting on Tuesday.

The proposed store, which would create 20 new jobs, will feature 1,378 sq m of internal floor space, of which 990 sq m would be retail space.

This compares to 900 sq m in a previously permitted scheme from 2009. The main change is a small addition to the west end of the building.

Since plans were lodged, objectors have claimed the site entrance should be from The Mease, as Huntspill Road becomes very congested at peak times and, when cars are parked there, the situation becomes worse.

The widening of Huntspill Road was also put forward as a suggestion, or creating a traffic island.

Another objector said the proposed opening hours of 8am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 5pm on Sunday were excessive. They are an hour longer each day than was permitted in 2009.

Concerns about traffic have been eased after Aldi agreed to pay £55,000 for a pelican crossing to be installed on The Mease.

The applicants have also included a recycling centre for cardboard and plastics but, in agreement with the council’s waste team, is smaller than previously permitted.

A report to the council said: “The applicants assert that the new plans improve links through and visual presence of the existing local centre and that the site is accessible by a choice of transport including walking, cycling and public transport.

“It would improve the local and surrounding area by providing new pedestrian routes and crossing points to the shopping centre.

“The supporting documentation identifies a modest increase in associated traffic.

The proposed development would have no significant impact on road safety or highway capacity and the capacity of the car park has been increased to reflect the floor space increase.”

If approved, the store would feature a car park for 64 vehicles.
