TWO people have been injured in a collision between a lorry and a van which has closed part of the A42.

The van driver was flown to Walsgrave Hospital, in Coventry, by air ambulance after the crash happened at 7.01am today (Wednesday, January 2) on the southbound carriageway near junction 11 at Appleby Magna.

Leicestershire Police said the casualty's passenger was taken by ambulance to the Queen's Medical Centre, in Nottingham.

A spokesman said both casualties were trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed.

She said neither appeared to have suffered life-threatening injuries but described the driver's condition as 'poorly'.

The driver of the flatbed lorry escaped unharmed from the collision, which closed the southbound carriageway between junctions 11 and 12 and the outside lane of the corresponding northbound stretch.

The police spokesman told the Mail: "The southbound carriageway is expected to be closed for a few more hours while the damage to the carriageway is repaired."

She said traffic was being diverted along the B1146.

Officers have launched an investigation in a bid to determine the collision's cause.

Anyone with any information is urged to call Leicestershire Police on 101.
