The Derby County boss, who left the Pirelli Stadium in January, hopes the pair go on to match the length of his stay with the Brewers.

Clough was appointed Albion boss in October, 1998, and went on to become the longest-serving manager in the club's history.

"If they stay around as long as I did, then hopefully that means they will have helped to add to the club's success," he said.

Clough continued: "Having Gary there is important because he's local and he's played for the club, which is important for a bit of continuity.

"Surviving in League Two should be the bottom line first of all.

"They have to establish themselves in the League for the first time in almost 60 years of existence.

"It will be hard because it is a tough league, but the nucleus of the squad Paul has inherited should be good enough to play in League Two.

"It might not prove to be just a good grounding for Paul as a manager.

"He might end up staying at Burton for 10 years with a bit of luck.

"If that's the case, then it means everything is going well, not only surviving in League Two but looking to challenge towards League One.

"The one bit of advice I would offer to Paul is that he shouldn't regard the job as simply a stepping stone.

"I don't think he can afford to do that.

"Judging by the level of interest in the job, it's viewed as a very good job and a stable job.

"That comes from the chairman and the brilliant facilities at the Pirelli.

"I don't think Paul and Gary could be taking over at a more exciting time.

"Any help we can give them from this end will be available to them and we wish them all the luck going."

ALBION skipper Darren Stride welcomed Peschisolido's appointment, but admitted it had taken him by surprise.

Stride said: "I think everyone was expecting it to be someone else.

"But I think I speak for the rest of the lads when I say I'm glad it's someone who's young with something to prove just like when Nigel Clough was given the job.

"It's also nice that Gary Rowett is involved because he was with us for nine months as a player and knows what the club is all about."
