A BINGO enthusiast says she is looking forward to her letter from the Queen as she celebrates her 100th birthday today.
Violet Wright was born in Castle Gresley, on August 3, 1910.She lived in the same Castle Gresley house until it was bombed in the Second World War.
Mrs Wright attended a school in Swadlincote, before leaving to work for an engineering firm, in Woodville.
The centenarian married her late husband Wilfred Wright, in 1941, and moved to Moira where they lived for 65 years.
The couple had two children – Anne, who now lives in Essex, and Roger, who is in Melton Mowbray.
Mrs Wright was widowed in 1993 and continued to live in Moira until 2006 when she suffered a bad fall, and subsequently moved to her present home in Grangewood Lodge, Netherseal.
The birthday girl said she used to enjoy cooking, knitting, sewing and gardening when she was younger.
Mrs Wright said: “I enjoy life very much and especially living in the home.
“I’ve been at the home for four years and I’ve got a few friends. I enjoy playing bingo here and the word games.
“I’ve had so many highlights in my life and I couldn’t tell you what the secret to a long and happy life is, as I’m not sure.
“I’m looking forward to receiving my telegram from the Queen.” The home was due to hold a birthday party for Mrs Wright today, with live entertainment, and a big birthday cake.
Elaine Debney, a senior carer, said: “We wish Violet a very happy birthday and all the happiness in the world from the staff and all the other residents.”
