POLICE have launched an investigation into an incident of suspected voyeurism at a popular marina complex near Burton.

Staffordshire Police confirmed to the Mail that forensic tests were currently being undertaken on a concealed camera-type device that had been uncovered in the ladies’ toilets at Barton Marina, in Barton under Needwood.

The shocking discovery was made by a cleaner at the site and it is feared it could have be in place for around 10 hours before it was removed.

Police are now urging anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area on Friday to come forward immediately.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “We received a report that a camera was found concealed within the ladies’ toilets at Barton Marina on Friday, January 24.

“It was reported to have been put in place between 7am and 5pm.

“The camera equipment, which was discovered by a cleaner, will undergo a forensic examination and officers are investigating this incident of voyeurism.

“Anyone with concerns or information on the incident is asked to contact PC Mark Jones at Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 588 of January 24.

“Alternatively, they can contact independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.”

Officers are set to take a closer look at CCTV footage of the area in the next few days as part of the ongoing investigation.

A spokesman for Barton Marina said they were still awaiting a report from the police on the exact nature of the device that had been found.

It was also confirmed that officers had visited the site to take a statement from the cleaner and remove the device.

Bosses said they would comment after more facts emerged.

The marina was built in 2001 and is privately owned.

It features an array of attractions including canal boat moorings, shops, eateries and the award-winning pub/restaurant The Waterfront.
