'Walking wounded' victim dies weeks after vehicle smash
A 58-YEAR-OLD woman sent to hospital ‘as a precaution’ following a serious road traffic collision has died weeks after the incident.
Norma Exton, of Tudor Way, Newhall, passed away at Burton’s Queen’s Hospital on Saturday, February 11 — two weeks after the collision.
She and her husband, John, were travelling along Knights Lane, in Bretby, in a blue Ford Focus on January 31 at around 12.45pm when their car was involved in a collision with an orange Daewoo Matiz near Planters at Bretby Garden Centre.
Fire crews from Burton and Swadlincote were called to the incident, where two casualties were trapped in the Daewoo.
Crews worked in tandem to remove the roof from the vehicle and the casualties were taken to hospital by air ambulance.
Police closed the road off for more than three hours while the rescue operation was under way.
The 59-year-old male passenger of the Daewoo was taken to Royal Derby Hospital and the 28-year-old female driver was taken to University Hospital Coventry - both were said to have serious injuries.
In comparison, the injuries thatMrs Exton and her husband suffered were not believed to be as serious at the time and they were described as ‘the walking wounded’.
The couple were taken to Burton’s Queen’s Hospital by land ambulance as a precaution.
Police were unable to confirm the details which surrounded Mrs Exton’s death.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “A man and woman from the Matiz suffered serious injuries and they remain in hospital.”
Officers are still investigating the matter, and have now re-launched an appeal for information following the tragedy in the hope of unveiling the cause of the collision.
Anyone with information, or who saw either car prior to the collision, is urged to call Derbyshire Police on 101, or alternatively Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
