HUNDREDS of shoppers have packed into a former landmark shop in Swadlincote for the opening of a brand new store.
Neil Atkin, the chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, officially opened alworths at 46 High Street — which once housed the popular Woolworths store before it closed down in 2009.Trading along similar lines to its predecessor, alworths is a general retailer which sells everything from branded toys to haberdashery, and its managing director, Andy Latham, was present for the opening.
alworths also stocks a large choice of pic ‘n’ mix and other sweets, branded toys, entertainment products, homeware and garden items, together with stationery, party accessories, cards and gift wrap, and household convenience purchases.
A team of nine staff have already been employed at the new store, under the leadership of trading manager Amanda Chell.
She said: “I was delighted to receive the call from alworths and I didn’t hesitate in accepting the position. I’m looking forward to the challenge of managing the new store and establishing alworths in the Swadlincote community.”
The official opening featured music, balloons and free promotional cups of pic ‘n’ mix for the first 200 customers through the door.
Councillor Atkin said: “We are delighted that a flagship store in Swadlincote town centre has been filled with a national variety chain like alworths, which will further broaden the shopping experience for visitors.
“It is another clear indication of the confidence the business community has in Swadlincote, following the start of work to the golf course and hotel, the proposed retail development at the former Wraggs Pipes site and the council’s efforts in revamping The Delph to the tune of more than £1 million of Government funding.
“We would like to welcome alworths to the town and wish it a successful and prosperous stay here.”
