SATELLITE television owners are being warned about a potential team of ‘con artists’ who have been targeting homes in East Staffordshire.
Concerned customers contacted the Mail after a group of men claiming to be from ‘Sky Security’ tried to gain access to homes and to personal banking information.
Roger Geoffrey, of Stapenhill Road, Burton, said: “It all began when I noticed this van park up just down the road.
“A couple of blokes jumped out and started walking up and down the street.
“I thought nothing of it until there was a knock at the door and it was one of the men I saw earlier.
“When I answered the door, he said ‘I am from Sky Security’ and asked what my name was straight away and as reaction I just said it.
“Then the man started asking me about my Sky television package and my set top box and whether I had warranty.
“He then started asking if he could come in and take some details to verify who I was.
“I thought something was wrong so I told him to leave and shut the door in his face.
“I then rang through to Sky, which denied any involvement with the company and said it would never use such an approach.
“I haven’t heard a thing since but I just wanted to warn other people in case it happens to them.” Judith Etheridge, from Branston, had also been contacted by the company.
She said: “This ‘Sky Security’ rang me and started asking about my subscription and bank details.
“I knew something wasn’t right when they addressed me with my wrong name and when I asked them to confirm who they were, they back-tracked and I put the phone down.
“When I tried to call back the number, there was no answer so I tried to get through to Sky.
