DRIVERS in Burton and South Derbyshire will receive motoring advice this week from the UK’s largest independent road safety charity.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is offering useful information on eco-driving as part of Go Green Week, a national event held to raise awareness of climate change and to promote practical solutions for a low-carbon future.

Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner and Britain’s top advanced driver, is on hand to offer tips including switching the engine off in a traffic jam, removing excess weight, and checking vehicles regularly to ensure they are operating efficiently.

Motorists are also advised to try to brake as infrequently as possible by slowing down and taking the foot off the accelerator earlier when approaching a queue, junction, roundabout or red traffic lights.

He said: “We’ve all got better things to spend our money on than petrol. Green driving can save you up to fifteen per cent on your bills, as well as reducing your carbon emissions.”

To help drivers stay safe this winter, the IAM has launched a new website, containing traffic updates, weather forecasts and tips on how to drive safely in winter and it is available by visiting www.drivingadvice.org.uk
