POSTERS have been put up in East Staffordshire doctors surgeries advising patients to care for themselves when suffering from minor ailments this winter.
The British Medical Association started the campaign to help ease pressure on the NHS.
The posters advise those suffering from colds or sore throats to self-care with over-the-counter medication rather than visiting their GP and nearest hospital accident and emergency department.
The campaign comes at a time when excess winter deaths across the UK are on the increase with 3,400 in the West Midlands last year.
Dr Bob Morley, who represents the medical association, said: “Our health service is stretched to its limits and is finding it increasingly unable to respond to these surges in activity.
“It is essential that patients are aware of where and how they can access the most appropriate care.”
