A DISCOUNT retailer is set to open a new store in Burton in the home of a former high street giant.
B&M Bargains will be opening a store in Coopers Square shopping centre on the site of the former Woolworths shop.
The large 11,000 square foot store will open in approximately three weeks’ time.
The store will be creating more than 30 jobs, details of which will be available from the local Job Centre.
Operations director Carl Allen said: “What is amazing about our growth is that is has been secured just through word of mouth.
“We are finding that simply opening the doors is sufficient for a store to attract on average 10,000 shoppers every week.
“The secret to this is very simple — we sell branded product at discounted prices.
“The shopping public are obviously voting with their feet.”
Work is continuing on the site to get the store up and running to join more than 230 B&M Bargains stores nationwide.
The chain, which also has branches in Uttoxeter, Lichfield and Stafford, was formed in 1976 and claims it is now one of the leading variety retailers in the UK.
From its first store in Blackpool, it now employs more than 6,000 people and attracts more than one million customers a week with stores throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The company has been recognised as one of the top 100 fastest growing private companies in the UK by the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 ranking.
The site in Coopers Square has been closed since retail giant Woolworths closed its doors for the final time on January 2 2009.
The company went into administration in 2009 after problems with competition from supermarkets and internet-based competitor shops such as Amazon.
The closure of the Burton store saw 33 people lose their jobs.
