AN 11-YEAR-OLD schoolboy has seen his passion for cooking fuelled after a chef in one of the Midland’s top restaurants took him under his wing for the day.
Jack Baines took to the kitchen of celebrity chef Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse Bar and Grill in Birmingham to realise his dream and cook under the supervision of the acclaimed kitchen’s chefs.
Currently studying cooking at school, Jack, from Alrewas Hayes, pestered his parents to contact the restaurant and enquire about work experience.
The youngster told the Mail: “I’ve always liked cooking and cook all the time but I definitely want to get into it more now.
“I was surprised how small the kitchen was and it was really warm in parts.
“I enjoyed meeting the chefs and getting to know how hard they work.”
Jack’s mother Jo had managed to arrange the work experience through mutual friends.
She said Jack had taken the experience ‘with a pinch of salt’.
“He was very cool and calm about,” she said. “He got signed chef whites from Marco which was lovely and Simon took him under his wing for the day.
“He had a wonderful time.”
Simon Johnson, group development chef for Interstate Hotels and Resorts, said everyone was impressed with Jack’s attitude.
He said: “We were blown away by Jack’s passion and enthusiasm for cooking and were delighted to be able to give him the opportunity to cook under the restaurants head chef.
“It’s so refreshing to see someone as young as Jack taking up an apron both at school and home. The secret to becoming a chef is practice and experimentation. Some of the world’s greatest dishes were made by accident.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming Jack back to the restaurant very soon – but who knows, next time he may be applying for a job”
