PUPILS attended a girls football festival to celebrate the launch of a major ladies football tournament.
Youngsters from schools across East Staffordshire also met the England ladies team star Jill Scott at the festival at Meadowside Leisure Centre to mark the start of the UEFA Women’s Under 17s Championships.
The school children then travelled to the Pirelli Stadium to watch the England side’s game against Portugal which they won 6-1 to secure their place in the semi-finals of the competition.
Councillor Bernard Peters, East Staffordshire Borough Council’s deputy leader for service commissioning, said: “Giving local children the opportunity to spend time with current professional footballers has given them an insight into what you need to do if you ever want to become a professional in any sport.
“The England team have been impressed by the level of support they have had at the grounds.
“We are extremely proud that we have been able to be involved with this tournament.
“It is very important that support is given to the younger England teams so they know what to expect as they continue through the ranks”.
