A CINEMA is set to become the epicentre of culture and sport in South Derbyshire by offering live screenings of both.

Odeon, which is based at the Pipeworks retail park, in Swadlincote, has announced a link up with National Theatre Live that will see performances of London West End show beamed live to the South Derbyshire venue.

Works such as Warhorse and King Lear will be starring on the big screen and making the cinema the area’s ‘epicentre’ of culture.

It comes at a time when the cinema chain has also closed a deal to screen live sporting events at the venue such as the World Cup later this year, rugby and cricket matches.

A spokesman for the cinema chain said: “See your sporting heroes larger than life, catch front-row seats for every concert or enjoy a night at the opera or the ballet.

“Odeon Plus brings that unique cinema experience to everything you love.

“Now people can enjoy sport, music and theatre on the big screen, often beamed live in by satellite and always using the latest state-of-the-art sound and digital projection technology.”

The scheme has been such a success that the Swadlincote site had to show the live stream of War Horse in two screen as demand for tickets was so high.

A spokesman added: “The National Theatre’s production of War Horse has been seen by over four million people worldwide since it premiered in 2007 and we’re delighted to offer people in Swadlincote the opportunity to watch such a renowned performance live at their local cinema.”

The move to screen theatre and sport at the venue has resulted in a 110 per cent rise in ticket sales.

The venue will be screening a live version of War Horse on Thursday, March 13 and Sunday, March 30.

It will also be showing the Sam Mendes directed King Lear on Thursday, May 1 and A Small Family Business on Thursday, June 12.

Tickets are available to purchase on ODEON’s website www.odeon.co.uk mobi.odeon.co.uk, via the ODEON Plus booking line on 0871 224 1891 or by calling in at the box office.
