A FACEBOOK site has been set up by dozens of people who oppose plans for a Burton petrol station to sell alcohol 24 hours a day.

‘Fuel Not Booze – Stop Shell Selling Alcohol At Burton Forecourt’ was launched after it was revealed that Shell UK Oil Products Limited had submitted an application to East Staffordshire Borough Council for permission to sell booze round the clock at its site in Belvedere Road.

Several people have backed the efforts to oppose the scheme, with organisers even looking to set up a petition opposing the move.

In a statement on the social networking site, the group stated: “We are trying to stop the sale of alcohol at a petrol station 24/7. It has already led to antisocial behaviour in the Horninglow area.

“Shell have made an irresponsible application to be able to sell alcohol at its Belvedere road site. Let’s work as a community and put an end to this.”

The application states: “Shell UK Oil Products Limited have applied for a licence for their garage on Belvedere Road for the sale of late-night refreshment and alcohol for consumption off the premises.”

The requested hours are as follows:

l Provision of late-night refreshment from 11pm to 5am from Monday to Sunday for hot drinks only;

l Provision for the sale of alcohol for 24 hours a day from Monday to Sunday; and

l To extend opening to 24 hours a day.

It has been revealed that the borough council’s licensing team has requested further information from the applicant’s agent in relation to the primary use of the premises.

People can comment by emailing licensing@eaststaffsbc.gov.uk by June 6. Further information about the application is available by calling 01283 508692.
