From sheep racing to egg hunting Easter in the south west is fun

Written byBY STEPHEN SINFIELD

IF you’re after a novel and wacky way to enjoy Easter this year, how about sheep racing or a giant egg hunt?

Sheep racing is certainly a unique sporting event and this tradition held at The Big Sheep in Bideford, North Devon is the perfect Easter activity.

Will you put your stake against number one ‘Red Ram’, number four ‘Golden Fleece’ or maybe number six ‘Woolly Jumper’.

Couple this with a giant Easter egg hunt — the largest in the south west.

A staggering 30,000 miniature chocolate eggs will be hidden throughout the Big Sheep site.

As well as having the opportunity to exchange three mini eggs for one big egg, visitors can watch enchanting newborn lambs being fed by their mothers and even help bottle feed orphaned lambs.

Also at The Big Sheep is Ewetopia, the attraction’s indoor play area, which has a selection of slides, ball ponds and soft-play climbing features.

And for dads, there is also the Big Sheep brewery demonstration which includes real ale tasting sessions.

To help make Easter more affordable, Blue Chip Holidays is offering half-price off the cost of entry to The Big Sheep this Easter.

To qualify for this half price ticket offer, all you have to do is book a self-catering cottage starting from as little as £509 for a week at Adipit Cottage near Bideford.

A group of ten can enjoy the week from under £18 per person per night staying at The Decks on the outskirts of Bideford.

PLACES TO STAY

Guests can stay nearby on the coast in Westward Ho! where seven nights can be booked over Easter for four from £759 at 17 Horizon View.

This beautiful apartment has panoramic sea views across the beach and out to the Atlantic. Three nights can be booked from £542.

A little further up the coast Ocean Point, which overlooks Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows, has a selection of stunning apartments sleeping between four and six guests that are available over the Easter break from £703 for three nights or £989 for a seven night break.

Below the apartments, the Atlantic Ocean breaks and crashes onto the beach providing perfect surfing conditions, while Braunton Burrows provides children with a sand dune paradise to explore and play games of the Arabian Knights in.

For a really large family gathering The Decks on the outskirts of Bideford sleeps ten in four bedrooms.

It has large enclosed gardens and a games room with TV, Wii games console, a pool table, toys and bookshelves containing books for all ages, plus a range of games.

While the kids are playing, the rest of the family can sit back and relax in front of the 42in flat screen TV with Freeview, DVD player and selection of films.

There’s even a hi-fi with an iPod adaptor. Seven nights over Easter are available from £1,249.

Three nights can be booked from £885.
