SUPERMARKET chiefs temporarily withdrew copies of the Mail containing comments urging customers to ignore fines issued for violating their parking policy, it has been revealed.

Morrisons, in Coppice Side, Swadlincote, cleared Thursday’s edition from its shelves after a front page article included claims from a Swadlincote driver who said the store’s parking fines were unenforceable.

Barbara Hall, of Pennine Way, who contacted the Mail after being sent a £40 fine from parking management company Parking Eye, claimed the penalties were only enforceable if issued by the police or local authority.

Morrisons told the Mail that the decision to withdraw the newspaper was made at ‘store level’ and was later overturned once head office became involved.

A Morrisons spokesman said: “A decision was made at store level which was rectified as soon as we became aware of it.”

The Mail understands that the edition was back on the shelves by 2pm — too late for some customers to buy a copy.

I was sent a fine for supposedly parking over the time limit. My partner had taken my car to rinkway garage at lunch time, driving through Morrisons car park and driving back through the car park in the evening to return home. The camera can only see you entering and leaving the car park but cannot see if the car is actually parked in the car park. The manager of Morrisons sorted the fine for us with no hesitation.

Morrisons seems to have forgotten that the people of Swadlincote lost a free car park so they could build their petrol station. It seems that they are hell bent on losing the goodwill of the people of this town over such a foolish matter. It would be much better if they faced us directly instead of hiding behind Parking Eye. Talk to us, deal with us, and this can be solved quickly and without further bad feeling.
