MAJOR improvement works along the A38 will see parts of the busy carriageway closed overnight for five weeks.

The Highways Agency told the Mail that the measures were set to be put in place alongside a 50mph speed limit on sections of the road so workers can undertake essential drainage and resurfacing work.

The work is expected to start on Wednesday and the new sanctions will come in to force from Monday.

The maintenance will be carried out between 10pm to 6am and during the entire five weeks lay-bys will be closed.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “A 50mph speed limit will be place on the southbound carrigeway from the A50 to the centraline of the A50 underbridge at the Toyota roundabout.

“This will be also in place southbound from the A5121 junction to the A5121 Derby Road bridge, the slip road leading from the northbound carrigeway to the Clay Mills roundabout and the slip roads from the southbound carrigeway to the junction with the A5121 and the A50.

“This will be supplemented with closures northbound between Clay Mills and the A50 Toyota roundabout junction.

“As well as southbound between the A50 Toyota roundabout junction and the Branston junction of the A38 and slip roads leading to the A38 both southbound and northbound from the Toyota island to Branston.”

Vehicles will also not be allowed to enter or leave the A38 at points in Church Road, Carriers Road or the Castle Way.

Diversion routes will be in place via the A50, A511, A5121 and the A513 which will be signposted before the work begins.

Emergency vehicles will be exempt from all of these conditions.
