BURTON and South Derbyshire College has been given the go-ahead to create a new three-storey building featuring state-of-the-art teaching and sports facilities.

Disused workshops are to be demolished to make way for the new block, which will form a link between the Lichfield Street site's main building and Fleet Street area.

The development will form a central part of aspirations to modernise the college and improve teaching areas, with proposals to introduce a plaza also in the pipeline.

A design statement from architects, Stubbs Rich, said: "The key requirement for the building is to improve the college facilities for students and staff within a contemporary building that makes reference to the heritage of the town."
