PLANS for 485 homes to be built on a former Ministry of Defence site in Hilton have been approved.
The planning committee met at South Derbyshire District Council to discuss the proposals set out for the land south of The Mease by St Modwen Developments.
Despite previous objections from both Hilton Parish Council and Eggington Parish Council, the committee voted in favour of the proposal and commended planning consultant Jason Tait on a proactive consultation.
Councillor Julie Patten, who represents the Hilton ward, said she "broadly supports the application" but expressed concerns over the area's susceptibility to flooding and the lack of a dental practice in Hilton which led to a further two conditions being placed on the application.
The first states that a unit in the neighbourhood centre be kept open for a period of 12 months to allow for a dental practice to join the area, and the second for the site to be audited by a chartered surveyor.
Mr Tait said he is pleased with the outcome and has no problem with the news conditions.
He said: "We're very pleased that everyone at the meeting was quite supportive of the plans.
"The parish council has expressed its views but I don't feel they are reflective of the wider population.
"At our public consultation, the majority of people thought it highly beneficial for the area.
"We're now keen to try and progress the development further and are working on detailed plans."
