STAFFORDSHIRE Police hve united with other forces across the West Midlands to tackle street racing.

Almost 50 officers from various districts took part in the operation on Sunday.

It saw police helicopters alerting ground units to any suspicious gatherings of cars, while mobile speed camera vans were deployed on 'speeding hotspots'.

West Midlands Police Chief Inspector Kerry Blakeman said: "Sunday evening has, in the past, seen illegal street racing in the Midlands and we have witnessed some shocking scenes where major routes have been turned into race tracks by thrill-seekers.

"We haven't seen a return to those days but operations like this allow us to share intelligence on street racing and act as a reminder that the police will not tolerate organised antisocial driving."
