WITH the medals of her great grandfather and great-great grandfather adorning the walls, eight-year-old Esther Scanlon gets some practice in as a village prepares to mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War.

The Hilton schoolgirl will be among a crowd of people who are expected to turn out at a candlelit service at St Mary's Priory Church, in Tutbury, to mark the anniversary on August 4.

Various 'Lights Out' services have been organised for the occasion in Burton and South Derbyshire.

Those attending will be asked to bring a candle or a torch.

The candles will then be gradually extinguished from 10pm, with the last light to go out at 11pm – the hour war was declared in 1914.

More information about the event is available by calling Jane Nuth on 01283 810166 or by emailing jane@nuth.me.uk
