A PUB near Burton is celebrating the town’s rich history with a nod to one of its most famous landmarks.

The Sump, in Newton Road, Winshill, has officially opened its new eye-catching viewing platform overlooking the River Trent.

Martin Mitchell, franchisee at the pub, said: “We were down for a refurbishment anyway and as we get a lot of business in our beer garden during the summer, we asked Marston’s for more decking. The idea just snowballed and we decided to put a replica of the Ferry Bridge there. We will put tables and chairs there as it overlooks the Trent.”

Marston’s spent around £10,000 on the bridge and another £20,000 on the pub, and a replica waterwheel entrance to its beer garden.

It seems money well spent, as Mr Mitchell added: “Our customers love it. It is nice and pleasant during the day, and at night it is all lit up with fairy lights.”

The real Ferry Bridge will turn 125 this year.
